The Economic Development Advisory Committee is recommending the town help out the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship this year.
At Monday night’s meeting, council referred two resolutions passed April 4 by EDAC to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation.
The first resolution recommends the town waive user fees at the Memorial Sports Centre for the bass tournament—contingent upon a study that shows an economic impact to our community in the amount of not less than $1 million.
The second one recommends the town donate $5,000 to the operating budget of the FFCBC, and that it pursue an additional $3,000 through the Rainy River Future Development Corp.
Also Monday, council authorized Mayor Roy Avis to attend a possible future meeting with Finance minister Dwight Duncan regarding policing costs.
Red Lake is trying to secure a meeting with Duncan, and has been in touch with municipalities such as Fort Frances, Kenora, Sioux Lookout, and Pickle Lake, which have expressed concerns about high policing costs, to see if they would participate in any meeting at Queen’s Park regarding the issue.
The Administration and Finance executive committee discussed the matter April 5, and recommended the mayor attend any forthcoming meeting.
“At this time, there is no scheduled date but the town may need to respond quite quickly to any future confirmation,” Fort Frances CAO Mark McCaig noted in a written report to council.
“The attendance of all the mayors from these municipalities will give significant weight to the important matter being raised,” McCaig added.
Council also agreed Monday night to a request from the CNIB to proclaim May, 2011 as “Vision Health Month,” and May 26 as “Shades of Fun Day,” in the Town of Fort Frances.
For “Shades of Fun Day,” the CNIB is encouraging everyone to care for their eyes, wear sunglasses that have UVA and UVB protection, and go to work wearing sunglasses, as well as consider making a donation to CNIB.
Also at Monday’s meeting, council:
•appointed Cindy Mason to the Committee of Adjustment for a term ending Nov. 30, 2014;
•appointed Tara Albanese to the Theatre Advisory Committee for a term ending Nov. 30, 2012;
•appointed Nicke Baird, Robin Dennis, Robert Lidkea, Robert Sletmoen, and Alan Zucchiatti, to the Sunny Cove Camp Advisory Committee for a term ending Nov. 30, 2012;
•appointed Beth Caldwell to the Museum Advisory Committee for a term ending Nov. 30, 2012;
•authorized day care staff to negotiate a third-party agreement with both the public and separate school boards for the delivery of before- and after-school child care;
•directed the preparation of a bylaw to change the zoning prescribed as Part 1 Plan 48R-3747 on McIrvine Road as follows: permit the parking/storage and sales of new and used motor vehicles, permit the storage and sales of new utility trailers, and permit, by redefining a motor vehicle dealership, the property to be used as a secondary location of an existing motor vehicle dealership (West End Motors) with the requirement for a structure;
•advised L. O’Flaherty that council deny a request for the return of a security held under a site plan control agreement security for Boston Pizza, but upon submission of acceptable documentation will waive the one-year maintenance period and return/release the security in full;
•agreed to a recommendation of the Administration and Finance executive committee that council approve per capita funding in the amount of $52,955 to the Rainy River Future Development Corp. ($7 per capita);
•agreed that an MPAC advisory notice of amendment for property at 315 Third St. E. be processed; and
•authorized the mayor and clerk to execute a Transport Canada contribution agreement on behalf of the town (this is the next step in applying for Airports Capital Assistance Program funding to get a wildlife management fence at the airport, with the town likely to learn later this spring whether the project is approved).
