Looking to determine some long-term direction for corporate activities over the next several fiscal years, the Town of Fort Frances will hold a strategic planning session on Friday, Sept. 5.
“Every five years we work on a strategic plan,” noted Mayor Roy Avis. “I’ve been on council now for nine years, and over the nine-year period we’ve worked on it twice and haven’t completed it.
“We haven’t really got a total strategic plan in place, so it was brought forward by council and myself to work on this and get a plan for the future of this municipality,” he added.
Mayor Avis said the strategic plan should encompass everything, from ongoing issues like economic development to the more recently discussed trail system and active transportation plan.
The all-day meeting will be held at Sunny Cove Camp starting at 9 a.m. It is being held there as a sort of “retreat,” noted Mayor Avis, adding it should allow council to focus on the exercise at hand without distraction.
“It’s more of a planning session to start with, where we identify what our needs and wants are for the next five years and set a direction,” he explained.
Mayor Avis said the session is to get the strategic planning process going, stressing it will take far longer than just that one session before the plan’s ready.
“As the plan is developed, it will be brought forward at council and discussed at council,” the mayor said. “It will be discussed prior to becoming a bylaw.”
The session at Sunny Cove will be open to the public, pursuant to the Municipal Act, 2001, but only to observe and not to provide input at this point.
