In order to mark the centennial of the Canadian navy, a framed pictorial history of the Fort Frances namesake warship, HMCS Fort Frances, will be presented to Mayor Roy Avis at 7 p.m. tonight at the Civic Centre.
Lt. Cmdr. Les Newman will present the display, which includes a photograph of the ship, a picture of the ship’s badge, and a short history of the ship’s service.
More than 300 ships have been named for communities across the country since the Canadian navy was first established in 1910.
The HMCS Fort Frances was commissioned into the then Royal Canadian Navy on Oct. 28, 1944 in Port Arthur, Ont. (now Thunder Bay).
Lt. Terry Newman, commanding officer of the Fort Frances Royal Canadian Sea Cadets, also will be on hand for tonight’s presentation.
Similar presentations are being made across Canada to bring attention to the centennial of the Canadian navy.
Also tonight, council will hear a presentation by Carly Pruys, a Grade 10 student at Fort Frances High School, who will read her winning essay from the contest held in conjunction with Local Government Week (Oct. 18-24).
The public portion of tonight’s meeting is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. It will be preceded by the committee of the whole, which will meet in-camera starting at 5 p.m.
Other business at tonight’s meeting will include:
•RFP-09-CS-16 (library shelving);
•RFP-09-CS-17 (skate sharpening at the Memorial Sports Centre);
•a request from the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce re: reduction of arena fees;
•a request from Bethel Baptist Church for a new street light;
•a report on parks and cemetery flowers for 2010;
•a geospatial data license agreement with KGS Group for an infiltration/inflow investigation study;
•a report on a revision to water system standard operating procedures;
•a financial request from the Fort Frances Lakers;
•minutes of settlement for 300 Eighth St. E.;
•a public meeting regarding applications for tax adjustment at 835 Crowe Ave. and 1106 Second St. E.;
•a final oral report from clerk Glenn Treftlin re: Local Government Week;
•a request from the Alzheimer Society to proclaim January, 2010 as “National Alzheimer Awareness Month” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•a bylaw to provide for the use of alternative voting methods and optical scan vote tabulating equipment in the 2010 municipal election; and
•a bylaw to approve an agreement with the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) for financing of equipment for the new Fort Frances Public Library and Technology Centre.
Items on the in-camera agenda include:
•multiplicities of litigation;
•a request by Treaty #3 Police Services for a water and sewer connection;
•condominium development;
•a potential sale of town property;
•a statement of claim from the Rainy River District School Board re: J.W. Walker School; and
•appointments to the Economic Development Advisory Board and Sunny Cove Camp Advisory Committee.
