The town will be investigating potential sites for residential development, including the second phase of the Kaitlyn subdivision here.
During the May 3 meeting of the Administration and Finance executive committee, the next phase of the Kaitlyn subdivision was brought up.
The town purchased land that would be used for Phase II of the project back in July, 2008. But to this point, there has been no serious interest from the private-sector to buy property for the purposes of developing such a subdivision.
“It was acknowledged that any development of these lands would probably be an initiative undertaken by the town in the interests of being able to provide fully-serviced building lots,” Fort Frances CAO Mark McCaig wrote in a report to council.
He added there is a capacity for 27 lots within this phase of the Kaitlyn subdivision.
As such, the Administration and Finance executive committee recommended to council that the town look into all aspects of developing it.
But at Monday night’s council meeting, Coun. Rick Wiedenhoeft said the recommendation should include more potential sites than simply the Kaitlyn subdivision.
“I know there are at least three other areas that have potential for development, and I think it would be short-sighted of us just to look at one subdivision when we could look at a multitude, and make the most effective and most efficient recommendation,” he stressed.
“I agree with Coun. Wiedenhoeft,” said Coun. Andrew Hallikas.
“I think in view of the potential economic situation developing around us, we want to look at all possibilities in terms of developing lots,” he reasoned.
Council passed a motion Monday night to support investigating all aspects of the potential development of Phase II of the Kaitlyn subdivision, with the Operations and Facilities executive committee being the lead committee.
