The town will be upgrading three traffic control signals tomorrow to comply with recent changes to the Highway Traffic Act.
In an e-mail to the Times, Operations and Facilities manager Doug Brown said the upgrades will occur at the following intersections:
•King’s Highway at McIrvine Road;
•King’s Highway at Keating Avenue; and
•Central Avenue at Second Street East/Third Street West.
The advance phase for left-hand turns for eastbound traffic on King’s Highway at McIrvine Road and Keating Avenue will remain in place, but the signals will be upgraded.
The circular flashing green signal indicating an advance phase for left turns will be eliminated and replaced with new steady left-turn arrow signals.
At Central Avenue, the advance phase for left-hand turns for northbound traffic will be eliminated.
Instead, northbound traffic and southbound traffic will have their own phase, meaning that when the light is green for southbound traffic on Central Avenue, the light would be red for northbound traffic.
Once the southbound traffic phase is over, the normal traffic signal phase of northbound traffic would commence.
The upgrade work will begin at the McIrvine Road intersection around 9 a.m. (once the morning high school traffic clears).
During the upgrades, the traffic control signals will be non-functional for a short period of time and an OPP officer will be directing traffic.
Once the work is completed at the McIrvine Road intersection, it will proceed to the Keating Avenue and finally to Central Avenue.
All the work should be completed during daylight hours tomorrow.
