Town seeking public input on 2004 budget

Town residents are welcome to give their suggestions and comments to council on what they feel are the most important municipal services and projects—and thus should be considered during the 2004 budget process—at a public meeting this Monday (March 15) at 6 p.m. at the Civc Centre.
“We encourage everyone to come out, or watch it, and provide us with your opinions, and help us put the final budget package together,” Mayor Dan Onichuk said at Monday night’s regular council meeting.
“I think it’s essential the public participate. I think they should come out in person and have their say,” echoed Coun. Tannis Drysdale. “They should contact the town and tell them they want to say something.
“It doesn’t have to be a formal presentation. It can just be five minutes of their thoughts,” she added.
“I think we’ve built all the great things in this town together. And this budget is something we all have to do together,” Coun. Drysdale added.
Mayor Onichuk added the special meeting will feature a Power Point presentation that hopefully will clearly demonstrate the town’s financial situation and what it plans to do about it.
Clerk Glenn Treftlin said there’s been no response yet as far as anyone wanting to make a presentation at Monday’s meeting, adding those wishing to have their say are encouraged to register prior to noon this Friday (March 12).
Those interested should contact Treftlin at 274-5323 ext. 236 or 257.
The town also is requesting that any documents or materials for distribution to councillors should be filed with Treftlin at the time of registering.
About 10 minutes will be provided per presentation.
Comments or suggestions can be directly submitted to council via e-mail at or by fax at 274-8479.
Treftlin noted the town’s Website address is and not (the latter is that of the Fort Frances Times), and that any unsuccessful attempts to contact the town via the Internet may be because of this similarity.
Monday’s public meeting also will feature a short presentation by management describing the revenues and expenditures of the municipality at that time.
The meeting will be broadcast simultaneously on Shaw Cable Channel 10.
The town is looking to finalize its 2004 budget by March 31.
