Press Release
The Town of Fort Frances is optimistic the assets pertinent to the sale of the local kraft mill are being heated to a degree that likely will maintain them in a saleable condition.
“This is an important step in what will be many to secure a new buyer for the facility,” Mayor Roy Avis said yesterday afternoon.
“The prices for forest products are strong and we have seen significant interest by potential buyers,” he noted.
“We will use the winter to work with the minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, First Nations, Métis, unions, and Resolute Forest Products to facilitate that sale,” the mayor added.
The conditions required to attract and secure investment for the facility include:
•that the mill be heated so as to protect vital mill components over the winter;
•a provincial wood supply that is economically viable, is provided in a transparent manner, and under the control of the new mill owner; and
•a willing seller for the kraft mill.
“We are further pleased that Mr. Garneau identified the terms under which they will sell the mill, and that those terms include providing the mill at no cost while retaining the Resolute-incurred environmental legacy liabilities,” Mayor Avis said.
It’s also agreed the Crossroute Forest will be the source of supply for fibre to new mill owners, he noted.
