Town out to clarify use of Point Park

The Town of Fort Frances is bringing a motion to Superior Court in Thunder Bay tomorrow (April 22) to permit its maintenance and use of Pither’s Point Park to continue.
“As the public is aware, there are court cases ongoing as to the ownership and rights of use to the Point Park,” the town said in a press release issued yesterday.
“The town’s motion attempts to clarify the use of the park until the legal questions of use and ownership are answered,” it noted.
“Negotiations between Canada, Ontario, First Nations, and the town for the continued use and maintenance of the Point Park have been unsuccessful to date,” the town added.
The press release stated the town was advised earlier this year by the First Nations that the interim arrangements for the town’s maintenance and continued use of Pither’s Point Park would not be extended.
“The town, as always, will continue to pursue resolutions outside of the court process and good relations among parties,” it said.
As previously reported, the 99-year Agency One land lease expired at the end of last April.
But just prior to then, an agreement was reached between the town and Couchiching, Naicatchewenin, Nicickousemenecaning, and Stanjikoming First Nations that permitted the town to continue to maintain the park for the season.
That interim arrangement was not extended for this year.
