Town opts to review animal control bylaw

Following up on numerous complaints from the public, the town’s Planning and Development executive committee will review the local animal control bylaw.
“We’ve had a lot of problems,” said Mayor Roy Avis, who requested the bylaw be reviewed.
“Our animal bylaw hasn’t been reviewed for many years, so I brought it forward so we can get it up to current times, and make sure to protect all the citizens of the community, even the ones without the animals,” he added.
Mayor Avis said the town, and even he personally, has received “numerous complaints” related to animal control.
He noted these reports range from concerns over the number of pets people have in their homes and on their property (and the level of care some animals are receiving from their owners) to noise complaints, animals running at large, and even licensing.
A review of the bylaw would cover everything from the town’s policy on impounding animals at large to the definition of a “vicious dog.”
“It’s a complete review,” Mayor Avis stressed. “Council’s going to have to sit down and completely review the bylaw and come up with a new bylaw that will serve the needs of the present day.”
While animal control may not seem like a big deal to some residents, Mayor Avis said it’s a bigger issue than many may think.
“The two biggest complaints I receive as mayor are property standards and animal control,” he remarked.
