Summer showers are a fact of life in Rainy River District and can ruin the best-laid plans.
As a precaution, the town will furnish the Memorial Sports Centre as a “rainy day location” at no cost to the Canada Day organizing committee this year.
In a report from Community Services manager Jason Kabel, he noted Cynthia Donald and her group of six volunteers requested use of the arena as a back-up plan in case of bad weather on July 1.
He said the group has many ideas to enhance July 1 activities this year beyond the parade, beach volleyball, bathtub races, and fireworks of the past couple of years.
These include a dunk tank, antique cars, sailboats, kayaking, horseshoes, a sand castle contest, a “fun run,” and seniors’ yoga and Tai Chi.
There also will be paddleboards, cardboard boats, Bingo, food vendors, kids’ activities, entertainment by Fort Frances Little Theatre, and an air band contest.
Council agreed to the recommendation of the Community Services executive committee to provide the arena as a “rainy day location” at its regular meeting last night.
Also last night, council:
•received the preliminary 2016 operating and capital budgets (the operating budget indicates a deficit of $166,953);
•referred the request for a complimentary one-year Memorial Sports Centre membership for the refugee family of six that will be arriving in Fort Frances in the next few months to the Administration & Finance executive committee for further input and its recommendation;
•approved a donation to the Border Skating Club’s Sunset Country regional skating competition in the amount of $200, in compliance with the Membership & Grant Policy;
•approved the request for staff participation in the development of a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the construction of the multi-use outdoor courts project;
•received the Minutes of Settlement for properties located at 750 Second St. W., 1210 Olde Shambles Rd., 1701 Lyndy Place N., 706 Armit Ave., and 1106 Christie Ave. N. for the 2015 taxation year (the total financial impact is $2,815.13, consisting of a reduction of municipal revenue of $2,521.57 and education revenue of $293.56);
•approved the adjustment of 2015 taxes in the amount of $11.91 for property located at 815 Scott St., and 2014 and 2015 taxes in the amount of $802.04 for 228 Sixth St. E. under Section 357/358 of the Municipal Act; and
•received the Minutes of Settlement for property located at 400 Central Ave. for the 2014 and 2015 taxation years (the total financial impact is $457.90, consisting of a reduction of municipal revenue of zero dollars and education revenue of $457.90).
