Having citizens on municipal boards and committees is all part of decision-making in a community— and the Town of Fort Frances wants quite a few people to offer their time to its Community Services and Planning and Development divisions.
“There were some appointments made by the new council back in December, but there weren’t enough applications to fill all the vacancies,” Clerk Glenn Treftlin noted this morning.
“Hopefully, we’ll get some more this time. I do have some in,” he added.
Treftlin is urging those interested to make up their minds sooner than later as the deadline to apply is this Friday (Feb. 6) at 4:30 p.m.
at the main desk at the Civic Centre.
For the Community Services division, three spots have to be filled on the Museum and Cultural Centre Advisory Committee as well as five on the Recreation Advisory Committee.
Meanwhile, six community members are needed for the new Community Activities Advisory Committee, including two citizens at large with preference given to those under 30 years of age; two citizens at large with preference given to those under 50 years of age; and two citizens at large with preference given to those over 50 years of age.
This committee also will include two members of council or citizens appointed by the mayor as well as two students appointed from the Fort Frances High School student executive council.
The mandate of this committee is to communicate with, and solicit input from, town residents and organizations for the purpose of promoting and organizing special events and activities for all residents and visitors of the community.
As for the Planning and Development division, five citizens are needed for the Committee of Adjustment, one for the Planning Advisory Committee, and 12 for the Business Improvement Area board of management.
That latter committee is for local merchants only.
Terms of office expire Nov. 30, 2006 except for the Planning Advisory Committee, which is Nov.
30, 2005.
Terms of office are limited to a maximum of nine-consecutive years during a 10-year period.
That does not mean, however, that a person cannot submit an application to serve on any other board, committee, or commission that he or she is otherwise qualified to a member of.
Appointees are required to be residents of the Town of Fort Frances and eligible to be a member of council.
For further information, contact Treftlin at 274-5323, ext. 236.
Applications will be referred to the respective executive committees for recommendation to council.
