Council will vote tonight on whether to draw $194,868 from its corporate contingency reserve fund to pay for a revenue loss stemming from an assessment appeal by Canadian Tire Corp.
Canadian Tire Corp. had filed assessment appeals with the Assessment Review Board (ARB) for the taxation years 2009-16.
It withdrew the appeals for 2009-12 last year, leaving the assessment for 2013-16 remaining for the appeal process.
The ARB decided to reduce Canadian Tire property’s assessment here to the tune of $6,087,356 over four years, with the municipal impact being $201,270.43.
But this amount then was reduced due to an assessment increase to the commercial vacant land property class, which ended up being a net revenue loss for the town to the tune of $194,868.64.
Administration has recommended council pay for the shortfall from the corporate contingency reserve fund, which has been built up in recent years specifically to help mitigate revenue losses due to reassessment.
It is up to council whether or not to sign the Minutes of Settlement, and either file an appeal of the ARB’s decision or take no further action.
The committee of the whole will meet first at 5:30 p.m., but will go in-camera for an indefinite length of time to discuss five item (Agency One matters, contractual update, litigation/insurance claim report, Moffat Family Fund grant allocation, and an employment contact).

•a report re: the Fort Frances Children’s Complex 2017 budget initiatives;
•a report re: nominations for the offices of president and executive vice-president for the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association;
•a per dim claim for Coun. Ken Perry;
•a report re: Memorial Sports Centre summer student staff;
•a report re: deeming of properties; and
•a report re: requirement for a site plan agreement for Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board.
