For the 10th-straight year, the Town of Fort Frances will be receiving money from the Moffat Family Fund to hand out to local groups and service clubs with the aim of helping youths and families.
The town once again is eligible for $37,500 in funds to be redistributed to local worthwhile causes, and individuals and organizations are encouraged to start submitting their requests for a portion of that funding, along with a supporting rationale.
“In these trying economic times, having the Moffat Family Fund is a godsend for some of our local organizations,” said Coun. Andrew Hallikas, who sits on the committee which chooses the recipients each year.
He noted that in the past, the fund has helped out groups ranging from the Fort Frances Highlanders to the Salvation Army to several youth sports groups.
Coun. Hallikas encouraged non-profit organizations to apply, keeping in mind that funding proposals must benefit children, families, and the “less advantaged.”

Applications must be submitted by Friday, March 16 at 2 p.m.
Offering some advice to prospective applicants, Coun. Hallikas said it’s very important they carefully review the criteria.
He added that every year, the town gets applications in but not all of them make it to the review committee because some fail to meet the proper criteria (which is outlined in the advertisement elsewhere in this edition of the Daily Bulletin).
For example:
•funding proposals must benefit children, families, and the “less advantaged”;
•organizations from outside Fort Frances, whose activities do not have a direct benefit to residents of Fort Frances, will not be considered;
•charitable numbers should be included with submissions;
•those who have received funding for their project from any other sources should mention that in their application; and
•applications should be limited to two-five pages.
Coun. Hallikas noted groups that have received funding in the past are more than welcome to apply again this year.
As mentioned above, the deadline for applications is March 16.
The local Moffat Fund committee, which consists of Coun, Hallikas, Coun. John Albanese, Mayor Roy Avis, Linda Hamilton, Marie Howells, and Capt. Angel Sandoval, then will choose recipients and forward those selections onto the Winnipeg Foundation for final approval.
Those recipients likely will receive their share of the $37,500 in late spring.
