If you’ve previously wanted to throw your hat in the ring to be considered for Volunteer of the Year or Citizen of the Year but didn’t make the cut or shied away from applying, there could be a new category awaiting your candidacy in the near future.
Town council voted Monday to consider adding new awards to accompany Fort Frances’ Volunteer of the Year and Citizen of the Year recognitions of excellence to in a bid to further showcase all that the community has to offer.
“We’re having the Citizen of the Year, the Volunteer of the Year, and we’re also having the Volunteer Leadership of the Year recognition of excellence,” Councillor Bill Morrison said.
“There are going to be several new categories,” said Mayor Andrew Hallikas. “With Citizen of the Year, that was a very high bar. It took a lot of accomplishments, and yet there are some people who are contributing a great deal to the community. So, we want to recognize them for doing so many great things.”
“I think we have a lot of heroes in our community who give a lot,” said Councillor Kaleb Firth. “It’s great that we’re expanding capacity to recognize those individuals. There are definitely groups of people that I also think deserve recognition. But I think it takes pressure off of one person exceeding the rest.”
