The Town of Fort Frances was activated as a host community and welcomed 145 residents from Attawapiskat First Nation on Saturday.
They are staying at the Copper River Inn.
Attawapiskat First Nation has declared an emergency due to high water levels on the Attawapiskat River, which have the potential to cause flooding within the community.
A Stage 1 evacuation of the community has been completed.
Emergency Management Ontario, along with other provincial ministries, continually are monitoring the water levels on the Attawapiskat River.
“The Town of Fort Frances, Canadian Red Cross, and OPP are working together with AANDC [Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada] to ensure that the residents of Attawapiskat First Nation are comfortable and safe during their stay in a Fort Frances,” said town public information officer Patrick Briere.
