The Town of Fort Frances once again is contributing in-kind services for this year’s Canada Day celebrations here.
Council agreed Monday night to pitch in the following aid, as requested by the Fun in the Sun committee:
•All spare garbage containers and picnic tables will be transported to Pither’s Point Park, Seven Oaks, and the marina area prior to July 1;
•Public Works will deliver sand and gravel to help anchor the mortar for the fireworks;
•Public Works will offer use of a bobcat, with lawn sweeper attachment, to help with the set-up and clean-up of the fireworks site;
•the Community Services division will offer the use of 10 tables and 20 chairs;
•Parks workers will till the existing beach volleyball court the week before the event and set up the volleyball net; and
•Public Works will put out barricades the day before the parade, so Fun in the Sun volunteers can set them up and take them down on the day of the parade.
Public Works then will pick up the barricades July 3.
The town is fulfilling most of the requests made by the Fun in the Sun committee, but said it could not provide two requested in-kind services.
The town would not supply snow fencing and T-bar poles for possible laser tag activities because the town only has a limited supply of fencing, and not in a position to supply more.
As well, the town would not relocate the bleachers from VanJura Stadium to the volleyball court at Pither’s Point since they are quite old and could be damaged in the move.
In addition to in-kind services, the town has contributed its annual $5,000 grant for fireworks to the Fun in the Sun committee.
The committee is in the process of firming up its activity schedule for July 1, but as of right now it looks like there will be kids’ activities, a volleyball tournament, bathtub races, a parade, and the fireworks.
As well, activities will coincide with the inaugural Boundary Waters Dragon Boat Festival taking place July 1 on the upper river.
