The Parks and Cemeteries department will be giving away surplus flowers to residents free of charge tomorrow morning (July 10).
From 8 a.m.-noon, flowers will be available for pick-up in the parking lot at Pither’s Point Park (between the “big chair” and office building).
There will be a limit of one flat (six dozen) per household.
“Each year, Parks and Cemeteries gets flowers for planting in the cemeteries and different parks and flower beds around town,” noted Sherin Hagen of the town’s Operations and Facilities division.
“This year, they ended up with a surplus and they decided to give them to the residents of Fort Frances,” she explained.
“There is a quite a few,” Hagen added, noting that each year, the department has to estimate how many flowers it will need when it orders them.
That means taking into consideration possible factors like how many extra flowers at gravesites may have to be planted, as well as damage from frost, dry spells, and deer.
This year, it ended up with extra.
