Town gives input to school board budget

In response to a letter from the Rainy River District School Board, the town has made several requests the local public board will consider in its 2004-05 budget process.
The Operations and Facilities division recommended the school board be financially responsible for snow removal from school bus loading zones, as well as evenly split the cost with the town to maintain and operate two pedestrian crosswalk systems.
The division also felt the school board should pay a portion of the cost of crossing guards.
Meanwhile, the Planning and Development division suggested the school board include funding for the following in its 2004-05 budget process: OPP presence in schools, doctor recruitment, and school crossing guards.
Council agreed to have the report containing this input sent back to the school board for its consideration.
In other news at Monday night’s meeting, council received year-end reports from Operations and Facilities manager Doug Brown regarding drinking water at the water treatment plant and the airport terminal building well supply here.
These reports indicated no action is required at this time, but Brown will keep council abreast of any new developments with regards to operating and maintaining the two water supplies.
Also Monday night, council:
•tabled the Rainy River Future Development Corp.’s service contract until the March 22 council meeting on the grounds more time was needed to go over background information;
•referred an application to “Communities in Bloom” to the Administration and Finance executive committee for recommendation;
•authorized acting CAO Mark McCaig to advise the Canadian National Institute for the Blind that the town will apply to the Moffat Family Fund for funding to help the CNIB pay for its Mobile Eye Care Unit;
•appointed Misty Christian to the Community Activities Advisory Committee;
•referred an application for up to $150,000 in bridge funding for the Kiwanis skate park to the Administration and Finance executive committee for a recommendation;
•approved a report to ensure training for water treatment plant operations and playground inspection be provided to the Operations and Facilities division on a required basis, and that a total expenditure of $8,500 for that training be approved at this time;
•tabled a request from the Northwestern Ontario Municpal Association for a nominee to the Northwestern Ontario District Health Council until the March 22 council meeting;
•authorized treasurer Peggy Dupuis to attend the spring meeting of Association of Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario and the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association annual general meeting, both of which fall between April 27-May 1 in Thunder Bay.
