The Town of Fort Frances is less than two months away from the official renaming of Colonization Road East and Colonization Road West.

Colonization Road East will become Agamiing Drive and Colonization Road West will become Sunset Drive. The official renaming will come into effect on Jan. 1, 2022.

Cody Vangel, chief building official and municipal planner, provided a verbal update to the Planning and Development Executive committee on Monday morning.

“I sent reminder notices on Nov. 3 to all property owners along Colonization Roads east and west,” Vangel said. “I wanted to send them a reminder with the holiday season coming up and things get hectic, just so they are keeping up on things.”

Vangel added that the next step the town would take is to formally notify the OPP, 911 and other organizations.

Under the address change policy, before the official name change the town is required to also send additional letters to property owners, along with another public notice advertisement in the newspaper.

Coun. Douglas Judson, who also brought forward the request to rename the roads, said he is glad that residents and business owners are kept apprised of what they need to do.

“I’m pleased to hear that that’s all moving ahead and thank you for keeping the property owners abreast of their obligations,” Judson said.

Vangel said the new road signs are ordered and will be ready to replace the old ones on Jan. 1, 2022.
