Town budget to be outlined

Staff

The 2017 town budget will be presented at tonight’s council meeting.
Treasurer Laurie Lindberg will explain the budget process, outline sources of revenue and what the town’s expenses are, as well as compare uncontrollable costs from 2016 with those in 2017.
She also will provide a taxation summary, and what it means to particular assessments in residential and other classes.
As reported last month, this year’s nearly $34.5-million budget includes a zero percent tax levy increase–meaning the town will not be collecting any more tax revenue than it did last year.
However, due to reassessment by the Municipal Property Assessment Corp., some property owners’ taxes will go up or down regardless.
The purpose of tonight’s presentation is to let residents know how the town is financed, how their tax dollars are applied, and what they’re paying for.
Town council also will vote tonight on the required bylaw to authorize the levy and collection of taxes.
That’s so administration can go ahead and get the final tax bills printed and mailed out.
Tax payments will be due on July 31 and Aug. 31.
The committee of the whole will meet first at 5:30 p.m., but will go in-camera for an
indefinite length of time to discuss one item (a Front Street property matter).
Other business on tonight’s agenda includes:
•a verbal update on capital projects;
•a resolution to signify the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship as a significant community festival and event;
•a letter from Sunset Water Sports re: operation of a water sports business;
•a letter from N. Donaldson (The Shops on Scott) re: invitation to participate in “Mall Day” on June 29;
•a bylaw to amend certain user fees in 2017;
•a bylaw to authorize the levying and collection of a special charge of taxes upon the Business Improvement Area (BIA);
•a bylaw to authorize the execution of an agreement for funding to complete the final phase to become an “Age Friendly Community”;
•a bylaw to approve a contribution agreement for funding for improvements to the Fort Frances Museum and Cultural Centre; and
•a bylaw to approve a transfer payment agreement for funding for the replacement of water and sanitary sewer mains along Second Street East.
