Whether it’s the history of a local service club, a photograph of an event, or perhaps an old family recipe passed down from generation to generation, the Fort Frances Times needs its readers’ help in publishing a special edition in April to mark the town’s centennial.
“We’re looking to have it around 100 pages, covering all aspect of Fort Frances. Businesses, people, leisure, sports, significant things,” said Linda Plumridge, office manager at the Times.
“We really need the community’s help with this,” she stressed. “It’s a community commemorative papers so we need their input.”
Plumridge noted stories could be about almost anything of significance or interest that happened in the past 100 years, including the history of a service club and its contributions to the community, a profile of an individual, or personal recollections of fond memories growing up in Fort Frances.
“We also want heritage recipes and the histories behind them,” she remarked. “For example, ‘My grandmother used to bake these. She got the recipe from her grandmother. . . .”
And those who don’t want to write a lengthy article simply can submit a brief answer as to why they think Fort Frances is a great place to live.
The public also is encouraged to drop by the Times office with photos of anything they think readers would find interesting.
“We really want to stress these don’t have to be things that are 100 years old, just things that have happened in the past 100 years,” said Plumridge. “It could be photos of construction of the old arena, or of a strawberry social.
“It’s a plus if you can identify the people in the photos,” she added.
She noted those who drop by the Times with photos won’t have to wait long to get them back as they immediately will be scanned in at the front counter to the specifications required for publication.
The special edition is planned to be distributed on April 11, but Plumridge said that in order to give staff sufficient time to lay out and print the supplement, all submissions must be in by March 1.
These can be dropped off in person at the Times office, mailed to the Fort Frances Times, 116 First St. E., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M7, faxed to (807) 274-7286, or e-mailed to mbehan@fortfrances.com
