The Fort Frances Times captured second place in its circulation class (4,000-12,499) in the “Best Web Site Design” category of the Canadian Community Newspapers Association’s 2008 Better Newspapers Competition.
Meanwhile, Times’ editor Mike Behan earned third-place honours in the “Best National Editorial” category for those newspapers with circulations of 9,999 or less.
Behan, who captured first place in this same category back in 2004, wrote last April about the need to preserve and embrace Canadian history.
And Ken Johnston, editor of the Times’ sister publication, the Rainy River Record, finished in second place in the “Best Spot News Photo” category in his circulation class (up to 3,999).
The awards will be presented May 9 at the 89th-annual CCNA national convention in Toronto.
In related news, the Times is among the top three newspapers vying for the “Best Feature Writing” category in its circulation class for the Ontario Community Newspapers Association’s annual awards.
The story, written by summer student Amanda Roy back in August, chronicled the struggles of a local teen battling an addiction to the prescription drug Oxycontin.
The Times will learn at the awards banquet April 5 in Toronto whether the story finished in first, second, or third place.
