Those looking for something to do on Valentine’s Day might want to get a ticket for the benefit production of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues,” which will be presented at 7 p.m. at the Townshend Theatre.
“Ticket sales are going well,” noted Peggy Loyie of the Rainy River District Victim Services Program, who is co-ordinating the “V-Day” campaign here—a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls.
Tickets will be available until tomorrow at From the Grind Up, Northwoods Gallery & Gifts, and the RRDVSP here, as well as the Coffee Landing in International Falls, for $15.
Tickets at the door will cost $20.
Funds from the one-night-only benefit reading will go towards the local Victim Services Program.
“It’s a series of monologues that [Ensler] has written and then so many are released each year that can be performed,” Loyie explained, noting they will be read by a number of local women.
“Every monologue deals with some aspect of the feminine experience, including violence [and] rape,” she added.
“Some of the monologues carry themes of war and what it’s like for women in war.
“These are actual people’s stories,” Loyie stressed.
The V-Day campaign has run for 15 years. More than 5,800 V-Day benefits were held around the world last year, raising funds and awareness towards ending violence against women.
But this is the first time the campaign is being held in Fort Frances.
Locally, it will strive to raise awareness and support of the RRDVSP, a non-profit organization that partners with emergency services to provide immediate emotional and practical support to victims of crime, violence, and other tragic circumstances.
