Tickets still available for TBSO

The Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra will perform here this Friday (Feb. 6) at 7:30 p.m. as a fundraiser for the Borderland Community Orchestra.
Organizers are hoping to get a sold-out crowd at the Townshend Theatre, said Katherine Williams, director of the Borderland Community Orchestra.
“This is a big anniversary year for us and we wanted to do something special,” she noted. “‘tour de Fort’ used to bring them in, but starting last year, they’ve been letting groups who need to do fundraising, like us, bring them in instead.
“We’re hoping the tickets sell well. It should be a great concert,” Williams added.
She noted there’s some history between the two orchestras as she used to be a member of the TBSO—commuting back and forth between Emo and Thunder Bay.
Then, five years ago, she left that orchestra to start the one here in Borderland. “They [the TBSO] helped us out on first year. They helped us get off on the right foot—I think very highly of them,” remarked Williams.
The TBSO will play several selections, including the overture to “Don Giovanni” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the overture and scherzo from “Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Felix Mendelssohn, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, and more.
Williams said the Borderland Community Orchestra needs money for new instruments. “We just got one of four new timpani. They come with a very big price-tag,” she noted.
“And we bought some orchestra chimes,” she added. “They usually cost $12,000, but we got a good deal on them.
“As you can imagine, we have some costs to cover,” Williams continued, noting the orchestra started with a number of donated used instruments that, while much-appreciated, have since gone into disrepair.
Tickets for the evening of classical music are still available for $20 each ($15 U.S.) at the Fort Frances Public Library, Northwoods Gallery and Gifts on Scott Street, Cloverleaf ShopEasy in Emo, and Borderland Community Orchestra members.
Williams noted the TBSO also will be performing a “music education” concert for district school children Friday morning at the Townshend Theatre.
