Three-year-old wins Safeway draw

Local Canada Safeway manager Dave McBride drew the three winning tickets for the Fort Frances Crime Stoppers draw there Saturday, with the money raised to go towards buying new playground equipment in town.
Jamie Spencer, the three-year-old daughter of Fort Frances OPP Cst. Caroline Spencer, won the first prize of $5,200 in Safeway gift certificates.
Elsie Wihnan and Robert Bombay won $500 and $100 in gift certificates, respectively.
Ironically, the youngster’s grandmother, Dr. Elaine Spencer, won the $5,200 in Safeway gift certificates in 2002.
Cst. Spencer said she and her daughter will give $1,000 worth of gift certificates to the Loncar family—Ratko, Irena, and Marin—who recently immigrated to Fort Frances from Croatia.
Another $1,000 will go to Crime Stoppers to buy supplies for the grand opening of any refurbished parks.
It was unknown at press time how much money was raised through the draw.
In related news, Feb. 12 is “Show Your Heart Day,” during which members of Crime Stoppers will be at Safeway selling coupon books—featuring $170 worth of savings—for $3 each.
Proceeds again will go towards new playground equipment here.
