Three-hour underpass closure slated

Staff

The Portage Avenue underpass tentatively is scheduled for closure next Wednesday (Oct. 31) from 9 a.m.-noon.
At that time, Town of Fort Frances crews will be cleaning out the storm sewer catch basins and manholes while the Fort Frances Power Corp. will be removing some abandoned electrical conduit from under the bridge deck.
As well, True Line Construction will be installing some spray foam insulation on the new piping to protect it from freezing.
During the closure, pedestrian traffic via the underpass will be maintained, as will access for emergency vehicles.
The underpass work is mostly complete, with the switch-over to the new storm water pump system already having taken place last month.
Landscaping was completed last week.
In related news, Makkinga Contracting has all but completed the watermain project along King’s Highway, from just east of Daniel Avenue to Pit Road No. 1.
Asphalt is being put down this week.
Likewise, the contractor has put in new storm sewer ditching on Eighth Street between Victoria Avenue and Christie Avenue, laid down a new road bed, and is scheduled to be done putting down asphalt this week.
Makkinga Contracting also has replaced nine fire hydrants in town.
Work on the Riverview Cemetery maintenance building also was completed earlier this month.
