A total of three tenders to do a batch of summer projects, including reconstruction of the water and sewer infrastructure on the 200 block of Third Street East, were submitted by Tuesday’s 2 p.m. deadline.
Wagner Construction Canada submitted a bid for $2,659,143.12 (incl. HST) while Tom Veert Contracting offered to do the job for $2,923,823.27 (incl. HST).
Bay City submitted a bid for $2,877,914.51 (incl. HST).
All the bids were opened publicly and read aloud in the committee room downstairs at the Civic Centre.
The bids now will be reviewed prior to any decisions being made. A recommendation will be made to council at its June 27 meeting.
The accepted tender has to be approved by council. The lowest bid, or any tender, will not necessarily be accepted.
According to town policy, the town reserves the right to reject any or all bids, to waive irregularities and informalities therein, and to award the contract in the best interest of the town in its sole and unfettered discretion.
The batch of projects being bid on include water and sanitary sewer line replacement, new storm sewer installation, and new asphalt on Third Street East between Mowat Avenue and Portage Avenue.
The road will be closed to complete the work, although residents will have access to their properties from their back lanes at all times.
More information about this job will be released later this summer.
It should be noted the bid amounts above include a second phase of work on Third Street East—from Portage Avenue to Victoria Avenue—but that will not take place this year and instead be part of the 2012 budget process.
Therefore, when the town awards the tender for this year, it will be for an amount less that portion.
The amount for the second phase of the project will be awarded to the contractor separately next year.
Meanwhile, this year’s other projects also will include work on the watermain at the Shevlin wood yard easement between Nelson Street and Church Street.
The town has received complaints about red or stagnant water from residents living in that part of town.
The contractor will be looping the water services there to tie into the force main, so the water moves more and it will not stagnate at a “dead end.”
The same thing will be done with the watermain on Sixth Street between Portage Avenue and McKenzie Avenue.
The project also includes rebuilding Osborne Street, between Christie Avenue and Armit Avenue, as well as the installation of new sewer and water services for a commercial property on McIrvine Road and the new 10-unit apartment complex being built by Wahkaihganun Futures Corp. up on Eighth Street.
The start date for the batch of projects is July 11, with a completion date of Oct. 7.
