The popular “Threadworks 2016: Flashback” exhibit opened this week at the Fort Frances Museum—marking the last time the biennial showcase of the finest fibre art from across Canada will be here.
Museum curator Sherry George said the organizers of the travelling exhibit have chosen to wind down “Threadworks,” and urged fibre art fans to drop by to get a final eyeful of the terrific textile creations.
“It’s been here every two years but this is the last time that they’re going to be running it,” George noted.
“They feel that it’s kind of run its course.
“I know it’s very popular here,” she added. “The community waits to hear that it’s up.”
The exhibit opened Tuesday and will run through the end of December.
“These are amazing pieces of work,” George enthused as she surveyed the museum walls.
“They have lots of detail; you can tell people put many, many hours of work into these,” she said.
“It’s all fabric but the odd piece is beaded,” George noted. “There’s little jewels on some of them; some have been quilted, embroidered, hand-stitched, whatever.
“There’s a few pieces that are woven.”
The exhibit features more than 30 pieces.
Some of the works have won awards, with the information cards next to the piece indicating those honours.
Meanwhile, the work of local artists and crafters continues to be showcased upstairs at the museum as part of Fibre Arts Festival 2016.
This juried exhibit began in September and also will run through December.
In addition to a panel of judges ranking each entry, public was able to enter their picks for People’s Choice.
Lori Yerxa earned first place with an appliqued skirt (“Brown Butterfly”) while Shelley Jordbro earned second with “Fill Me Up” (basket).
George urged museum-goers to be sure to check out the Fibre Arts Festival while they’re there to see “Threadworks.”
“We are going to repeat the Fibre Arts Festival in two years so if people want to get started, they can come and be inspired,” she added.
The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Admission is by donation.
