Donald Young School in Emo will receive the Rainy River District School Board’s Recognition of Excellence tonight for last April’s “Day of Pink” there.
Using the theme “Think Pink—Erase Bullying,” DYS staff and students were encouraged to wear pink.
An assembly also was held in the morning to kick-off the day.
“In the presentation, students were cautioned to remember that ‘Pink Day’ is not just about one colour or one day, but about all colours and accepting differences every day,” a report to the board noted.
To reinforce this premise, a story was shared entitled “The Crayon Box that Talked,” by Shane DeRolf.
“The message was that we all belong no matter what colour or how different we are to complete the big picture,” the report said.
It added school alumnus Maverick Judson, a local musician/songwriter, joined the DYS Glee Club and sang “True Colors” by Cindy Lauper.
“It was a very powerful performance,” the report indicated.
The assembly ended with each student receiving a pink Tyvek bracelet.
A number of activities then were held the rest of the day, including selling pink all-star cookies, with proceeds donated to the Kids’ Helpline.
A large school mural of the “Crayon Box” story also was created from squares drawn and coloured by each student.
This year’s International “Day of Pink” will be held April 8, when schools, businesses, and community members are encouraged to wear pink against bullying, discrimination, homophobia, transphobia, and transmisogyny.
Also at tonight’s board meeting, trustees will:
•look to approve the amendment to its Procedural Bylaw (definition of an ex-officio member);
•hear a presentation on aboriginal education supports;
•look to approve the following policies—1.40 (Policy Development and Review), 1.41 (Trustee Expenditures), and 8.22 (Expense Claims);
•look to approve the following policies for stakeholder consultation—6.11 (Tobacco-Free Environment), 1.08 (Trustee Code of Conduct), and 3.86 (Code of Conduct for Employees); and
•look to rescind Policy 8.20 (Travelling Expenses).
The meeting gets underway at 7 p.m. at DYS.
An in-camera session of the committee of the whole will meet first at 6 p.m.
