With the local pulp and paper mill making headlines nearly every week, a new documentary may be of interest to district TV viewers.
The film, “The Mill,” will have its broadcast premier on CBC tonight at 9 p.m. CST.
The film’s maker David W. Craig and award-winning producer Ann Bernier look at the history of the Northern Pulp mill in Pictou County, N.S. and the mill’s effects on the economy and residents.
Northern Pulp mill is looking at a deadline of January 2020 for the closure of its effluent treatment facility at Boat Harbour. The facility located on traditional Mi’kmaq lands.
If the mill cannot get a new facility in place by 2020, it will close.
This will possibly affect more than 2,700 jobs in Nova Scotia.
Northern Pulp is asking for an extension to the deadline.
The community is split between those who support the mill and those who want the government to close and clean up the harbour.
