Terry Fox Run to mark 20th anniversary

Area residents who want to participate in the 20th-annual Terry Fox Run–slated here and in countless other communities across Canada on Sunday, Sept. 17–won’t have difficulty finding a pledge form.
They’re available at more than 20 sites across town.
“I’m hoping that at least 200 people participate–the more, the merrier,” Joan Pearson, executive director of the Fort Frances Volunteer Bureau, enthused yesterday.
The Volunteer Bureau took over organizing the local run from Lila Saunders after last year.
“This is an excellent and very meaningful volunteer activity for young people and families and I want to see a big turnout there,” she added.
The Terry Fox Run, which raises money for cancer research, will start at the Fort Frances Museum and follow Scott Street to Victoria Avenue, down to Front Street, and then along the riverfront to just before the train tracks at Pither’s Point Park (the turnaround point).
Pearson noted a turnaround point also will be set up at the Sorting Gap Marina on Front Street for anyone who feels they can’t do the full 10-km route.
Two refreshments stands also will be set up along the route to quench the participants’ thirst.
“You can walk, job, run, in-line skate, or ride a bike,” stressed Pearson. “The most important thing is that you come out and participate.”
Pearson also noted she did not need any more volunteers to help stage the run.
