Terry Fox Run set for Sept. 18

The congregation of the Church of the Holy Spirit here once again has stepped up to organize the local Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research—and they’re hoping the community will join in to “work together to outrun cancer.”
The local “Marathon of Hope” is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 18 starting at the Sorting Gap Marina, with registration beginning at 1 p.m. and the run going at 1:30.
“It went really, really well last year and we’re hoping for even more people [to participate] this year,” noted head organizer Cheryle Wolff.
“We’re expecting a great turnout,” added congregation member Caren Fagerdahl. “I don’t think there’s a family I know of that hasn’t been touched by cancer.
“So it’s wonderful that the community all pulls together.”
The run, which is roughly five km long to the Seven Oaks area and back, can be completed twice by those wanting to run a 10K distance.
“It can be competitive for those who want to be competitive or non-competitive for those who just want to have fun,” said Fagerdahl, adding participants can walk, run, or ride their bikes.
“It’s all about raising money for cancer research,” she stressed.
Energy Fitness also will be leading warm-ups prior to the start of the run.
Fagerdahl noted there will be porta-potties and water stations along the way, as well as medals and loot bags for the kids at the end.
“Betty Fox passed away this year and she was so involved in all of this—she was one of the driving forces of it,” said Fagerdahl.
“So to honour her, every woman who participates will receive a carnation.”
Lunch will be served at the Métis Hall following the run, with the Devlin T.O.P.S. hosting the meal.
Pledge forms are located at businesses throughout Fort Frances and the district.
Terry Fox Run T-shirts also are available by contacting Wolff at 274-7074.
