A barbecue to raise funds for the Terry Fox Foundation, and the search for a cure for cancer, will be held tomorrow in advance of the annual Terry Fox Run coming up Sunday, Sept. 14.
Tomorrow’s fundraiser will run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the lot beside Pharmasave (the event’s corporate sponsor), said local Terry Fox Run organizer Vanessa Hebert, who also is executive director of the Fort Frances Volunteer Bureau.
“This barbecue is to get people aware of the [run] as well as raise money for the cause,” Hebert remarked.
“It’s also a chance for people to get their pledge sheets and purchase their Terry Fox merchandise in advance of the run,” she added.
The cost for the barbecue lunch is $3, which includes a hamburger, pop, and chips.
Hebert also noted it’s not too late to sign up and get pledges for the run, which will begin at the Fort Frances Museum at 2 p.m. on Sept.
14.
She noted people should realize they don’t have to be in it just to bring in the dollars. While it is a fundraiser, it’s also about just keeping the spirit of Terry Fox alive.
This year’s run is dedicated to local cancer survivor Rhonda Spuzak, whose family has been touched by several incidents of cancer. She will be on hand to cut the ribbon at the start.
Last year’s run was held in memory of Celeste Beck.
The 10-km route once again will begin at the museum, go down Portage Avenue to Front Street, and then continue along the riverfront to Pither’s Point, where participants will turn around and return to the museum.
A family barbecue at the museum— free to the participants and volunteers involved in the run—will follow.
Last year’s run here raised about $11,000, attracting 93 participants of all ages.
Hebert also noted local resident Ed Katona once again will be biking for the cause this year, going all the way to Minneapolis with Arnie Johnson.
If you can’t make it to tomorrow’s barbecue, sponsor sheets are available at the Volunteer Bureau (located in the old CN station) as well as various other places around town.
Hebert also has Terry Fox merchandise for sale there, including T-shirts, sweatshirts, baseball caps, and magnets.
For more info on these, call her at 274-9555 or drop by the Volunteer Bureau.
