More summer construction projects soon will get underway here after town council awarded two tenders at last night’s meeting.
Tender 12-OF-01 (2012 road reconstruction and watermain replacement) was awarded to Makkinga Contracting at an estimated cost of $801,341.76 (incl. HST and a contingency allowance of $100,000).
The tender consists of three projects to be done between June 18 and Aug. 31, including:
•the installation of a new road bed and asphalt surface, as well as storm sewer ditching, on Eighth Street East between Victoria Avenue and Christie Avenue;
•the replacement of 743 metres of watermain along King’s Highway, from just east of Daniel Avenue to Pit Road No. 1; and
•the replacement of nine fire hydrant sets at various locations throughout town.
It also includes a project for next year, namely the replacement of the watermain and sanitary sewer, and upgrades to the storm sewer system, on Second Street East between Central Avenue and just west of Mowat Avenue, and Mowat Avenue from Third Street East to just south of Second Street East.
This job is scheduled to begin May 22, 2013 and be completed by July 31, 2013.
Meanwhile, Tender 12-OF-02 (2012 Portage Avenue
underpass pumpstation modifications) also was awarded to Makkinga Contracting at an estimated cost of $423,987.30 (incl. HST and a contingency allowance of $10,000).
The work will commence July 15 and run through Aug. 31.
It will consist of extending the wet well, installing new storm water pumps and piping, installing a working platform, installing a new storm water forecemain from the pumpstation, removing the old pumphouse, and installing fencing.
Also at last night’s meeting, council:
•approved a report listing 32 obsolete items surplus, and that the town follow procedure to dispose of these items in the near future;
•accepted child care service audited statements for the year ended Dec. 31, 2011, and further that the invoice for audited services be paid;
•approved the 2012 BIA budget and tax rates;
•received a financial request from the steering committee for the Mayors Coalition for Affordable, Sustainable, and Accountable Policing and directed that no further action be taken;
•approved a break-open ticket licence application from the La Verendrye General Hospital Auxiliary at Sunset Schmiddy’s (272 Scott St.) from May 16-Nov. 1, 2012 (the licence will be processed in conformance with provincial regulations and rules);
•referred a financial request from the Town of Atikokan, re: funding for the advancement of development of a regional tourism route, to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation;
•referred a financial request from Royal Bank of Canada, re: the RBC Golf Tournament on June 23, to the Administration and Finance executive committee for it recommendation; and
•received a notice from the Rainy River Future Development Corp. re: its annual general meeting June 12 in Emo.
