An 18-year-old Lake of the Woods Township man was sentenced here Tuesday for a fatal hunting accident that occurred in December, 2007 in Morson Township.
Eric Olsen was sentenced to 80 hours of community services and six months’ probation at an Ontario Court of Justice hearing after pleading guilty to a charge of careless handling of a firearm in connection with the death of Tyler Cottam, 18, of Nestor Falls.
As part of his sentence, Olsen must abide by a 11 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew, and refrain from alcohol consumption and using illicit drugs.
He also is banned from possessing any firearms for seven years, and has forfeited two rifles to the Crown.
The two friends had been hunting deer with two other youths on Dec. 5, 2007.
Olsen’s firearm discharged while he was unloading it, fatally wounding Cottam, who then died in transit to Rainy River Health Centre.
