Teams set to pull all-nighter

Teams of 10 people will stay up all night as they rally together to raise funds for the fight against cancer at the Canadian Cancer Society’s annual “Relay for Life” event coming up June 22 at Pither’s Point.
Money raised during this unique 12-hour, overnight community event will fund life-saving cancer research and vital community-based support services that help people living with cancer.
“This overnight event is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for friends, families, neighbours, and co-workers to come together with one ultimate goal—to eliminate cancer,” said Nadine Johnson, chair of the local “Relay for Life” committee.
“‘Relay for Life is truly a celebration of life for anyone who has been touched by the disease,” she added.
The event opens with the “Survivors’ Victory Lap,” where cancer survivors lead the way around the track as a celebration of their strength and courage.
Then at dusk, the “Luminary Ceremony” takes place, allowing people to honour others who have been touched by cancer by lighting candles that are placed around the track.
Luminaries can be purchased at Taggs Source for Sports, Fort Frances Dental Centre, Royal Bank, Northern Lights Credit Union, Curves For Women, Celeste’s, Family Practice Dental Centre, and Pharmasave, as well as at Tompkins Hardware and Cloverleaf in Emo.
The “Relay for Life” is one of the cancer society’s largest fundraisers. Since 1999, the event has raised more than $48 million for the fight against cancer in Ontario.
Thanks to the support of the people who participate, the CCS is:
•funding cancer research that’s improving cancer treatments, preventing cancer, and saving lives;
•helping people through their cancer experience;
•educating people about cancer and prevention; and
•advocating for healthy public policies.
Each participant is given a “goodie bag” filled with treats and items as a special thank-you for their participation.
