Local public elementary teachers and elementary occasional teachers have voted to accept a tentative agreement with the Rainy River District School Board
The teachers ratified the four-year collective agreement Wednesday evening, and it ”passed by an overwhelming majority,” noted Sharon Preston, president of the local chapter of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario.
“Given the economic times and so on and so forth, it’s a good tentative agreement,” Preston said.
Details of the agreement cannot be released until the board also ratifies the deal, which is on the agenda for its monthly meeting this coming Tuesday night in Atikokan.
Should the board ratify the agreement, it will run from 2008-12.
“It was long and both sides worked very hard to come to an agreement,” noted Preston. “We’re certainly glad that that’s happened, and hopefully we can go forward from here.”
One important aspect that marks this tentative deal is that Mine Centre now is part of the Rainy River District’s collective agreement, Preston added.
Until this past September, when it amalgamated with the RRDSB, Mine Centre had been its own school authority.
“A big welcome to them; that we’ll all be one,” said Preston.
