Teacher talks slated for fall

Bargaining between school boards and teachers’ unions across Ontario will begin this fall after both elementary and secondary school teachers’ collective agreements expire Aug. 31.
Warren Hoshizaki, director of education for the Rainy River District School Board, said the board already has had one meeting with local teachers’ unions and “others are set for the fall.”
“We are willing to begin talks,” said Brian Church, president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation District 5B.
Church added the OSSTF is in the process of deciding what will be central bargaining issues, but was not prepared to discuss them at this time.
The public school board reached a two-year deal with both the local OSSTF and the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario Rainy River District Teachers’ local last April.
The deal was retroactive to Sept. 1, 2002.
