The town is conducting a survey to determine the need for on-demand accessible taxi cabs required in the community.
Human Resources manager Christine Ruppenstein explained yesterday that all municipalities are required to do this in accordance with the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005.
An accessible taxi is defined as “a vehicle, offered through a private broker, which can safely and comfortably transport a passenger with a disability who needs to remain seated in his or her mobility aid for the duration of the trip.”
North Air Services currently provides Fort Frances with one on-demand accessible taxi cab, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The short survey asks questions such as whether you require the use of an on-demand accessible taxi, how often you use one, and if you are satisfied with the availability of the accessible taxi service as provided in Fort Frances?
Ruppenstein said other municipalities have used a survey to assess this need, and so the town decided to do the same to gauge demand here.
She urged the public to fill out the survey and have their say regarding on-demand accessible taxis.
“Anyone that’s out there that has experience with or use for one, or is assisting people that require them, then by all means fill out a survey,” she remarked.

Ruppenstein noted she can print a survey off and mail it out to an individual, or have a paper copy printed off and available at the Civic Centre front desk for pick-up.
