Taxi rates may be on the rise

Town council will consider making revisions to amend the taxi bylaw to increase the chargeable rates for cabs at its regular meeting Monday night at the Civic Centre.
Council approved a recommendation from the Planning and Development executive committee back on July 26 that would raise the fees of hired taxicabs from $2.95 for the first .25 km to $3.35.
The additional increments of $0.10 for every .050 km would mean an increase of $0.10 per km over the current rates.
These increases largely are due to the hike in gasoline prices over the past few months.
Fees for deliveries, as well as luggage and package transportation, would remain unchanged, as would the waiting time rate of $30 per hour.
Other business at Monday night’s council meeting will include:
•a bylaw to amend an agreement with Paul Bock for a limousine service;
•a bylaw to authorize the levying and collection of a special charge of taxes upon the Business Improvement Area;
•a bylaw to authorize entering into an agreement with Leesa and Michael Schmid and Rebecca (Dodie) Wickstrom with respect to use of certain town lands;
•an oral presentation from Garry Potter, co-ordinator of Northwestern Ontario Crime Stoppers Inc., on the upcoming merge with northern Minnesota;
•letter of resignation from Audrey Mildred Martin from the Museum and Cultural Centre Advisory Committee, effective Aug. 6;
•a request from the Town of Iroquois Falls for support of its resolution regarding equal assessment and availability of the provincial gas tax to all Ontario municipalities;
•a request from the Township of Severn for support of its resolution regarding an endorsement of resolution request for provincial funding—Emergency Management Act; and
•a request from the City of Cornwall for support of its resolution regarding Ontarians with Disabilities Act special funding.
The council meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The committee of the whole meeting starts at 5:30 p.m., with the public session beginning at 5:45 p.m.
