Council will vote on a bylaw to authorize the levy and collection of taxes for all municipal purposes in the Town of Fort Frances for 2008 at tonight’s regularly-scheduled meeting.
If approved, tax bills will go out to property owners in mid- to late-June.
Taxes will be payable in two instalments—the first being due July 31, 2008; the second by Aug. 29, 2008.
As previously reported, council passed the 2008 budget at its May 12 meeting. Residential tax rates will jump 3.19 percent, or $57.16 per $100,000 of assessment.
Multi-residential will go up 3.496 percent (or $140.57 per $100,000 of assessment), with commercial rising 1.071 percent (or $58.92 per $100,000 of assessment).
Industrial rates will go up 1.376 percent ($66.51 per $100,000 of assessment) while large industrial would jump 1.377 percent ($121.28 per $100,000 of assessment).
Pipeline will increase 2.422 percent ($144.17 per $100,000 of assessment).
Other business at tonight’s meeting, which gets underway at 7 p.m. at the Civic Centre, includes:
•request from Melvin Haukaas for permission to place a windmill at his parents’ grave marker;
•a request from North Air Service to increase current meter rates;
•information regarding the installation of a new “Welcome to Fort Frances” sign at the municipal airport;
•information regarding building permits 2006-077 and 2006-078 (Bliss);
•purchase card expenses for CAO Mark McCaig;
•travel expense and per diem claims for Coun. Rick Wiedenhoeft;
•a request from Barbara Avis, property owner at 532 Colonization Rd. E., to install piping for a temporary river water pumping system within the existing storm sewer system;
•information regarding the purchase of a new fire truck for the Fort Frances Fire Department;
•public service announcements regarding water restrictions related to the water tower project, as well as a traffic safety issue at the corner of Front Street and Victoria Avenue;
•a letter from Mark Fontana regarding a request for property transfer;
•a request from M. Aileen Carroll, the minister responsible for seniors, to proclaim June, 2008 as “Seniors’ Month” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•a bylaw to approve a licensing and software maintenance agreement with Direct IT Corp. for building and planning department purposes;
•a bylaw to approve an agreement with C. Cousineau, N. Cousineau, A. Peters, and L. Peters to hold “laser tag” activities within town;
•an invitation from the Fort Frances Kiwanis Club to attend an open house June 12 at Sunny Cove Camp; and
•an item regarding the Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination.
The committee of the whole will meet first at 5 p.m.
