In a last-minute effort to save the “chem-free” grad party usually organized by Fort High teachers, local residents Diane Noonan and Linda Steele are hoping volunteers will attend a meeting here Thursday night.
“It’s an important, positive message to send out to the kids. Graduation is an important day in their lives and there’s no reason it should be marred by any events like a fatality,” said Noonan, who is encouraging everyone to come out to La Pace Rendez-Vous around 7:30 p.m.
Attendance at the meeting will determine whether planning a “chem-free” grad will continue.
“I spoke with [FFHS] principal Ian Simpson and he said that last year, basically, the teachers did it all,” noted Steele. “So this is an attempt to still have ‘chem-free grad’ even though the teachers won’t be involved due to their extra workload.”
Steele’s daughter, Katie, also is interested in organizing the event for her graduation class.
“Well, we surveyed the students [last week] and I had about 95 who were in favour of it. But that was only a quick survey–I think that all the students are behind,” she remarked.
“Anyone in grade 12 is invited. And for some people, it may be the last time they see friends together like this,” she added.
Noonan noted organizing it will involve not only volunteers for sharing ideas, footwork, and decorating but sponsors, financial support, and prize donors.
As for possible activities to keep the graduating class occupied for the all-night party, Noonan said, “We’re considering everything. We want as much input as possible.”
She added some ideas so far include a dance party and a sort of “Extreme Games” competition.
