Subway work to resume

The final stage of work on the Portage Avenue underpass should get underway in the coming weeks, Operations and Facilities manager Doug Brown said this morning.
Brown said CN has approved the soil anchor samples the town had been waiting on and given the nod for work to proceed.
The town most recently met with JTJ Contracting on Tuesday, with Brown noting it’s now up to the contractor to get in touch with its subcontractors, get them lined up for the job, and then come back to the town with a work schedule.
He expects to receive this work schedule next week, after which time the public will be informed of when the work will resume.
The work left to be done includes road construction, as well as the construction of the walkway on the west side of the underpass.
The total work should take two-three months, Brown said.
As in the past two years, the work will require regularly closing the underpass to one lane controlled by traffic signals at either end, but Brown stressed pedestrian access will be ensured at all times.
For example, even when the sidewalk is being built, a well-defined path for pedestrians will be provided.
Brown said more information on the construction resuming, and any traffic changes, will be forthcoming.
