Due to upgrades at the pump station, the Portage Avenue underpass will be closed temporarily to non-emergency vehicular traffic on both July 31 and Aug. 1 from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
During this time, Makkinga Contracting will be installing a new electrical service to the pump station, which will require the road and the usual pedestrian walkway to be closed, Operations and Facilities manager Doug Brown told council Monday night.
However, a temporary pedestrian walkway along the east side of Portage Avenue will be provided during this time.
As well, emergency vehicles will be able to travel through the underpass, if necessary, at all times.
The road and sidewalk will be re-opened for regular use during the evenings.
Makkinga Contracting has been working on the CN property for nine days, and so far has installed three storm sewer manholes as well as a new storm sewer forcemain under the tracks.
The company now is preparing to do concrete work and trenching.
In other news, Makkinga Contracting has set up temporary waterlines in the west end and will begin excavating to ultimately replace 743 metres of watermain along King’s Highway, from just east of Daniel Avenue to Pit Road No. 1, starting next week.
And the reconstruction work on the 300 block of Third Street East has wrapped up.
The landscaping is complete and the contractor continues to water the new sod on an regular basis, noted Brown.
