Sturgeon Creek to be saluted

Sturgeon Creek School’s efforts to promote parent engagement will be saluted at tonight’s Rainy River District School Board meeting.
The school and its council will receive the board’s monthly “Recognition of Excellence” following this past year’s effort to encourage better relations between home and school, including organizing a parent engagement evening.
This evening, held back in April, saw more than 75 parents and 50 students from both Sturgeon Creek School and Sturgeon Creek Alternative Program turn out.
They participated in a variety of workshops, such as “Reading Strategies that Work,” “Dads Make a Difference,” “Math Games,” and “Internet Safety.”
Tonight’s meeting also will feature a presentation on the Integrated Speech and Language Project—a provincial pilot project of which the local public board was one of seven demonstration sites across Ontario.
The board also will be selecting a trustee to sit on its Parent Involvement Committee for the remainder of 2011 and all of 2012.
The public portion of the meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the board office here following an in-camera session of the board.
