Students in Lynne Avis’ Grade 7 class at Robert Moore School are hosting a movie night fundraiser tomorrow for a classmate and his family.
Thomas Chapais was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2014.
After having his leg amputated, he had returned to school and was adjusting well to school life.
But he attended a recent regular check-up in Winnipeg where it was learned his cancer had returned.
A tumour was discovered on his shoulder and one that was removed from his lung in February had grown back.
“Our classmate’s cancer has come back so we just wanted to help out his family,” said Bella Hyatt, noting the class decided to hold a fundraiser and brainstormed different ideas before settling on a movie night.
The event will start at 6 p.m. in the school gym, with the movie “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip” getting underway at 6:30 p.m.
“We voted on the movie and thought it would be one that kids would like,” reasoned Jaxon Gartzke.
Kassy Michl stressed it’s not just for Robert Moore students—the entire community is welcome to attend.
There is no admission fee but donations will be accepted.
“Anyone who donates will have a chance to win a prize,” Michl said.
Children aged nine and under must be accompanied by an adult.
“We’re hoping a lot of people will come,” Hyatt said.
There also will be a canteen, bake sale, and other prizes to win.
Anyone who is able to donate baking can drop it off at the school tomorrow morning.
“I’ve seen a very genuine side to my class,” said Avis, adding they have been exceptionally kind and caring in regards to their classmate’s situation.
“They are very much wanting to help in any way they can,” she noted.
“They have done all the planning for this fundraiser.”
The class also will be selling popcorn to fellow students during the second block tomorrow for $1.
Meanwhile, a community fundraising barbecue also will be held for Chapais and his family on Saturday, April 30 from 5-7 p.m. at the Couchiching multi-use building.
The cost will be $10, with the meal featuring bannock burgers, hotdogs, salads, chips, pop/juice, and coffee/tea.
There also will be a door prize and a penny table, with proceeds from this event to help fund the youngster’s “Make A Wish” campaign.
His wish is to see the Toronto Blue Jays play and visit Canada’s Wonderland with this family.
