Students’ community service to be saluted

In its monthly recognition of excellence, the Rainy River District School Board on Tuesday night will salute the efforts of Robert Moore School’s Builders Club—a student-led community service organization.
The Builders Club is sponsored by local Kiwanis Club members Dr. Robert Lidkea and Ken Koprowski.
The club participates in various school and community projects, including the local Santa Claus and July 1 parades, the annual Robert Moore barbecue in June, in-school special events like candy grams and door decorating contests, and car washes.
Student members also have volunteered at Rainycrest Home for the Aged, planted trees at Sunny Cove Camp, and raised money for Friends of Animals, the Salvation Army, UNICEF, and “Operation Christmas Child.”
The Builders Club began in the spring of 2000 and elected its first executive in the fall of 2001. This year’s executive includes Kailey Bonner-Vickers as president, Brittainy Spence as vice-president, Katrina Wreggitt as secretary, and Moretta Onichuk as treasurer.
The club continues to grow, with roughly 30 members participating this year.
Also at Tuesday night’s meeting, which gets underway at 7 p.m. in the board office at Robert Moore School, trustees will:
•vote on a report on average class size for the board’s elementary schools;
•vote on a modified school year calendar for 2004-05;
•vote to appoint Laura Mills as supervisory officer to the position of superintendent of business;
•review a report on a new kindergarten registration process; and
•hear an update on construction at J.W. Walker School.
