The local Human Resource Centre of Canada for Students’ first “Jobs … or Jail” event was a success yesterday, having recruited 26 odd jobs for students looking for work.
Mayor Glenn Witherspoon agreed to sit in a large wooden “jail” in the courtyard in front of the Fort Frances Museum until at least 20 odd jobs were found.
“It went really well. I would definitely redo it,” said Kerri Langtry, a summer employment officer at the HRCC-S who organized the event.
“I thought the mayor did a terrific job finding people,” she added.
The mayor was given a telephone and phone book in his “cell,” and he made many calls to encourage employers and members of the community to hire students for their odd jobs.
Of the 26 jobs posted yesterday, the mayor recruited 18.
Also, five students volunteered to participate in a draw to donate two free hours of labour.
Ryan Wood, Derek Jones, Matt Thompson, Darcy Jones, and Kristin Pocock sat in the courtyard with the mayor from 1-3 p.m.
talking to people passing by and telling them about the draws.
“Everybody got at least one name in their [draw] box,” Langtry said.
Paul Forget, Kevin Singleton, and Dianne Gohn each won two free hours of labour while Shirley Dolph won babysitting time and grass-cutting.
