Fort Frances High School students were rewarded for their hard work yesterday afternoon during the annual recognition assembly in the Townshend Theatre.
“We have a wonderful student body and you folks, by your achievements, have shown what student leaders you are,” principal Gord McCabe in his opening address.
“Leadership is really about putting yourself out there,” he added. “I salute each and every one of you today, whether in your first year at Fort High or your fifth.
“You are truly the leaders in what I believe is a truly great school.”
The annual assembly recognizes students who have exceeded academically, who have donated time and effort to various clubs and organizations, and who have participated in the arts, athletics, and mathematics.
Awards also were given to students enrolled in the Red Cross First Responders.
Emcees Jenna Enge and Jordan York called the names of students to receive crests (for appearing on the Honour Roll three times), medallions (seven times), academic certificates (11 times), and pens (14 times out of a possible 16).
The program also was punctuated with performances by some of the arts award winners.
Kenneth Kellar, who received the award for Most Valuable Contribution to a Musical for his performance as Jean Valjean in “Les Misérables,” played guitar and sang for the audience.
Brittany Hayes, who received the award for Most Valuable Contribution to a Musical Review, sang “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” while Drew Donald, Cody Carmody, and John McCoy performed a scene from “M*A*S*H.”
The ceremony ended with the presentation of the Principals’ Award for Student Leadership to Lindsey Sockolotuk, who also won the award for Most Valuable Contribution to the Student Executive Council.
