Still no entries for FITS pageant

With the deadline to register coming up next Thursday (May 3), organizers still are looking for teen girls to participate in this year’s “Fun in the Sun” queen pageant.
“We’ve got no one yet,” said organizer Melissa Gushulak, noting registration forms are now available at the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce office (474 Scott St.)
“Some of the girls have been talking, saying they might have a couple friends who are interested,” she added. “I think the hardest part is finding a sponsor.”
Gushulak explained all contestants must find an area business—whether it be based in Fort Frances, Couchiching, Emo, Devlin, Barwick, or anywhere else in the district—to sponsor them for $300.
“You can approach any business,” said Gushulak. “Last year, one girl had two businesses—Liz Black had Tim Hortons and Pro Shine—so that kind of cut down the cost for the businesses to $150 each.”
In return, the contestants wear a banner with their sponsor’s name on it and promote their sponsor at every event they attend.
Contestants are eligible if they are aged 15-18 as of May 1, 2007, have a sponsor, and will be available to participate in community events throughout the next year (up to July 1, 2008).
Gushulak noted she’s looking for contestants who are committed, with a good attitude, want to meet new people, and are outgoing.
Anyone interested in participating in the FITS queen pageant should contact either Gushulak at 274-5206 or last year’s royalty (Queen Allyssa Holliday, First Princess Liz Black, and Second Princess Shanna Ewald) at Fort High.
A minimum of five contestants must be registered by the May 3 deadline or the event will not be held this year, Gushulak stressed.
She wanted to line up the contestants earlier than usual this year in order to get them involved in more activities prior to the July 1 crowning.
